Tribute to Dan - Mountain Laurel - .5 x 1.75 x 2 - 2002
- $675. I enjoyed an unusual correspondence with spoonmaker, Dan Dustin.
He would record his thoughts on carving spoons on a cassette tape and
mail it to me. I would start a second tape of responses to what Dan had
said and that went on for over 30 - 90 minute tapes. It was lively,
biographical, both praising and critical, and honest. Dan's favorite
wood is Mountain Laurel so I made this spoon from that wood in honor of
his sharing his thoughts with me. I own a few of Dan's spoons. Dan once
said my spoons would break if I tried to get refrigerated peanut butter
out of a jar. That was a test I had never considered. Dan played a role
in Norman Steven's interest in collecting spoons. Provenance: Norman and
Nora Steven Collection. Photo: Jim Osborn |
