"Spoon From a Forgotten Ceremony" - 24 x 4.75 x 3 – Nigerian Ebony - In
the 1990s I made several ceremonial spoons in this configuration with
the last being in 1999. Four of them are now in public collections. Over
a year ago I received a commission to return to this design using Ebony.
I wanted to make a commanding piece that claimed the space it occupied
and included a couple new elements without seeming to be a different
piece. This one has peaks at the bowl ends and triangles in relief at
the termination of each handle. The original idea was for a spoon to be
shared in a ritual, passed between participants requiring a handle at
each end - $3800 - SOLD. Photography by
Jim Osborn.
